5,000 mcg biotin

5,000 mcg of Biotin in Gelagen: Is It a Lot, and Is It Safe?

Quick answer

Yes, 5,000 mcg of biotin is a lot: about 167 times the 30 mcg Daily Value, or 16,667%. NIH sets no upper limit for biotin because no harm from the vitamin itself has been shown. The real issue is that high doses can make some blood tests read falsely high or low, so tell your clinician and the lab before any draw.

The size01

How much is 5,000 mcg of biotin?

It is 5 milligrams, or about 167 times the 30 mcg Daily Value for biotin, which works out to 16,667% (FDA, Daily Value).

The Daily Value is the amount FDA uses to put labels on one scale. For biotin, NIH gives an Adequate Intake of 30 mcg a day for adults (NIH ODS, Biotin). Gelagen's listed amount, if it is the total for two gummies, is a hundred and sixty-seven of those. If it is the amount in each gummy, a day's two gummies would give 10,000 mcg, or 333 times the Daily Value. The product sheet does not say which, and that uncertainty is why this site shows both.

166 and two-thirds dots. The gold dot is one Daily Value of biotin: 30 mcg. The product sheet lists 5,000 mcg, so it takes 167 dots (the last is two-thirds full) to draw it. If the 5,000 mcg is per single gummy and you take two, the picture doubles to 333 dots.

Each dot above is one Daily Value. The dots under the jar on the home page show the same thing at a glance.

Do you need it02

Do you need 5,000 mcg of biotin?

Almost certainly not, because most people in the United States get enough biotin from food and deficiency is very rare (NIH ODS, Biotin).

Biotin is a B vitamin that helps the body turn food into energy. When it is truly missing, hair thins and a scaly rash can appear. That is the picture that made biotin famous. But the missing-biotin picture is rare, and the American Academy of Dermatology says supplements should only be taken if you have a deficiency (AAD, Supplements for your skin).

If you have hair thinning or brittle nails, the reason is much more often something else, such as a thyroid problem, an iron shortfall, stress, a medicine or genes (MedlinePlus, Hair loss). A clinician can check those. Taking 5,000 mcg of biotin first could also hide the answer, because it can distort the same blood tests used to look for thyroid disease.

Safety03

Is 5,000 mcg of biotin safe?

For most healthy adults the vitamin itself has not been shown to cause harm at this dose, and NIH has set no upper limit, but safe for your body is not the same as safe for your blood tests.

The problem is a laboratory one. Many hormone and heart tests use a biotin-based method. Biotin in the blood sample can then fool the test, and it can do so in either direction depending on the test. FDA has received reports of falsely low troponin results, the test used to spot a heart attack, linked to biotin (FDA, Biotin and troponin tests). NIH lists thyroid hormone tests and 25-hydroxyvitamin D among those that can be affected, and says a single 10 mg dose interfered with thyroid tests given within 24 hours (NIH ODS, Biotin).

Special cases04

Can pregnant women or people on medicine take Gelagen?

Ask a clinician first: the product sheet describes the gummies for adults, and vitamin A, iodine and the biotin dose each have a reason for care.

Preformed vitamin A in excess can cause birth defects during pregnancy, and Gelagen's retinyl acetate is preformed vitamin A (NIH ODS, Vitamin A). Its 630 mcg is below the 3,000 mcg upper limit, but a pregnant woman who also takes a prenatal vitamin could add up to more than she intends. Iodine at higher amounts can interact with antithyroid medicine (NIH ODS, Iodine). And anyone who is going to have blood work should plan around the biotin.

The who it is for page has a short checklist, and the side effects page lists medicine cautions. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you started a supplement.

What to do05

What should you do if you take high-dose biotin?

Tell your clinician and the lab that you take biotin, and ask whether to pause it before the test.

  • Say "I take a supplement with 5,000 mcg of biotin" when you book blood work.
  • Bring the jar, or a photo of the label, to the appointment.
  • Ask which of your tests could be affected and whether to pause the gummies first.
  • Do not guess a number of days. Different tests and labs differ.
  • After the test, ask when it is fine to restart.

FAQ06

Gelagen questions people ask

Is 5,000 mcg of biotin too much?

It is far above the 30 mcg a day most adults need, but NIH has set no upper limit because the vitamin itself has not shown harm. The practical risk is lab-test interference, which is why the amount calls for a conversation with a clinician.

How many days before a blood test should I stop biotin?

Our sources give no single number. NIH reports that a 10 mg dose interfered with thyroid tests within 24 hours, and labs differ in which method they use. Ask the clinician and the lab, and tell them the dose and how long you have taken it.

Does biotin cause acne?

We found no source in our set that links biotin to acne, so we do not make a claim either way. People do report breakouts with high-dose B vitamins online, but those are personal reports. See a dermatologist if you have a skin change after starting a supplement.

Can too much biotin be dangerous?

The danger documented is not from the vitamin but from wrong test results. NIH notes a patient with high biotin intake who died after a falsely low troponin result, citing FDA reports (NIH ODS, Biotin). That is why disclosure to clinicians matters.

What foods contain biotin?

Many ordinary foods contain small amounts of biotin, which is why deficiency is rare. We do not give a food list because our sources are about supplements and labs. A dietitian can show you a list that fits your diet.

Is biotin the same as collagen?

No. Biotin is a B vitamin and collagen is a protein. Gelagen lists biotin and names no collagen. They are often sold together for skin, hair and nails, but a bottle that lists one does not contain the other (Cleveland Clinic, Collagen supplements).
