Guide: reading a label
How to Read a Gummy Supplement Label, With Gelagen as the Worked Example
Read a supplement label in six steps: serving size, servings per container, amount per serving, percent Daily Value, other ingredients and allergens, then the claim and the FDA disclaimer. Gelagen's product sheet lists 13 names and amounts but no serving size and no other ingredients, which is why this site shows its numbers two ways. Your jar's panel settles both gaps.

Six steps01
How do you read a Supplement Facts panel?
Start at the top with the serving size, because every number below it means "per serving", and a different serving changes them all.
FDA sets out what the panel must show: serving size, servings per container, the amount of each nutrient per serving and, where one exists, percent Daily Value (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). Read it in order, and do the small arithmetic yourself.
- 01
Pour a full glass of water
The product sheet says to take the gummies with a full glass of water. Check that the jar's safety seal is intact first.
- 02
Wait about 30 minutes before a meal
The product sheet times the dose about 30 minutes before a morning or afternoon meal. No evening dose is described.
- 03
Chew two gummies
Two gummies make one daily dose. Do not take extra gummies to catch up: the biotin is already far above the Daily Value.
- 04
Count your days
A jar holds 60 gummies, so one jar lasts about 30 days. Tell your clinician and the lab about the biotin before any blood test.
Most mistakes come from skipping step one. A panel that says "serving size: 2 gummies" means the amounts are for two. One that says "1 gummy" means a day's two gummies double every figure.
Worked example02
What does Gelagen's label show, and what is missing?
Gelagen's product sheet gives names and amounts for 13 nutrients and the directions, and it leaves out the serving size, servings per container, percent Daily Value and other ingredients.
| Step | Gelagen's product sheet | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Serving size | Not printed | Read your jar's panel |
| 2. Servings per container | Not printed; 60 gummies at 2 a day is about 30 days | Confirm on the jar |
| 3. Amount per serving | 13 names, e.g. biotin 5,000 mcg, zinc 2.7 mg | Check units |
| 4. Percent Daily Value | Not printed; we computed it | Compare with the jar |
| 5. Other ingredients | Not listed | Read the jar's line |
| 6. Claim and disclaimer | "Advanced Gummies for Skin Health"; FDA statement | Test the claim |
That is why this site shows two readings of every amount, and why it asks you to confirm against the jar. The label math page has the full table.
Gummy specifics03
What is special about reading a gummy label?
Gummies add three things to check: the sweetener, the gelling agent and the sugar amount, none of which a capsule label has to worry about.
The other ingredients line shows whether the gummy is set with gelatin, which comes from animals, or with pectin or starch, which come from plants. It lists sweeteners and colors. If you manage diabetes or count sugar, look for added sugars on the panel. Because gummies look like candy, check the storage line and keep the jar away from children. Gelagen's other ingredients are not in our material, so we say what we do not know instead of guessing.
The front of the jar04
How do you judge the claims on the front?
Treat the front as marketing, find the claim in quotation marks, and ask whether a study of the finished product backs it.
The FDA allows structure and function claims on supplements, such as supports healthy skin, and requires a disclaimer that the agency has not evaluated them (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). The FTC says health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). Gelagen's three captions, "Youthful Glow", "Deep Hydration" and "Smooth Appearance", are feeling words with no measurement attached. They are not false. They are not tested.
- Put the claim in quotes and ask what would measure it.
- Look for a trial of the product, not just an ingredient.
- Be wary of "clinically proven" with no study named.
- Remember that FDA does not approve supplements.

How do you check a label in two minutes?
Do the five-line check below on any supplement, and you will catch most of the problems that a longer review would find.
| Line | Question |
|---|---|
| 1 | What counts as one serving, and how many servings do I take a day? |
| 2 | Is any nutrient above 100% of its Daily Value, and does that matter for me? |
| 3 | Does any nutrient have an upper limit I could reach with my other products? |
| 4 | What are the other ingredients, and do they suit my diet and allergies? |
| 5 | Does the front claim have a study of this product? |
Write the answers next to the jar. If two or more are blank, you do not yet have enough information to buy.
Red flags06
What label red flags should you watch for?
Watch for proprietary blends that hide amounts, huge percent Daily Values with no reason, missing other ingredients, hype wording and a maker you cannot find.
FDA's tip-offs include "all natural" claims, "miracle" language, personal testimonials and quick fixes (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs). A label that hides amounts inside a blend makes it impossible to compare doses with a study. A label with no named distributor makes a recall harder to follow. Apply the test to any product, Gelagen included, and give the missing items their due weight.
Do not stop a prescription because of a label. Call 911 for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing after taking a supplement.
FAQ07
Gelagen questions people ask
What does percent Daily Value mean on a supplement?
It compares the amount in a serving with FDA's reference amount for a day. 100% means one day's reference amount. Some nutrients, such as inositol, have no Daily Value, so no percent is shown.
What is a proprietary blend?
A group of ingredients listed together with one total weight, which hides the amount of each. It makes comparing a dose with a study impossible. Gelagen's product sheet gives an amount for each of its 13 names, so it does not use one.
What are other ingredients on a supplement?
Everything in the product besides the listed nutrients, such as sweeteners, gelling agent, flavors, colors and fillers. They matter for allergies and diet. Gelagen's other ingredients are not in the product sheet, so read the jar.
Why are some vitamins listed in mcg and others in mg?
Because the body needs very different amounts of each. A milligram is a thousand micrograms, so compare units before comparing numbers. Percent Daily Value puts them on one scale.
Does a label have to list allergens?
FDA requires major food allergens to be declared on food and supplement labels. Gelagen's product sheet gives no allergen statement, so we make no allergen claim. Read the printed label, and ask the order desk if unsure.
What is a certificate of analysis?
A lab report for a specific lot showing what was measured, such as nutrient amounts and contaminants. A code that names one is not the report. We have codes for Gelagen and have not seen a report.
