Zinc and Iodine in Gelagen: 2.7 mg and 42 mcg, With the Cautions
Gelagen lists zinc at 2.7 mg (about 24.5% of the Daily Value if per two gummies) and iodine at 42 mcg (28%). Both are far below their adult upper limits of 40 mg and 1,100 mcg. Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics, and iodine matters if you have thyroid disease or take antithyroid medicine.

The numbers01
How much zinc and iodine is in Gelagen?
Zinc is 2.7 mg and iodine is 42 mcg, which are about a quarter of their Daily Values under reading A.
Both are small. Under reading B, with two gummies each holding the listed amount, they would reach about 49% and 56% of the Daily Value, still well below any upper limit.

Zinc02
What does zinc do, and does it help skin?
Zinc is a mineral used by many enzymes and by the immune system, and our sources do not show that 2.7 mg changes how skin looks (NIH ODS, Zinc).
The Daily Value is 11 mg and the adult upper limit is 40 mg. At 2.7 mg Gelagen is a small contribution. The more common way to go over is by stacking: a multivitamin, a cold lozenge and a zinc supplement can each hold more than a gummy does. NIH notes that people who combine a multivitamin with other supplements can exceed limits for zinc (NIH ODS, Multivitamin/mineral).
Zinc is sometimes marketed for acne. We found no source in our set that supports a claim for Gelagen's amount, so we make none. A dermatologist can discuss options with real evidence.
Medicine timing03
Does zinc interfere with antibiotics?
Yes, it can: NIH says zinc can reduce the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics if they are taken together (NIH ODS, Zinc).
The fix is timing and a question for the pharmacist, not a reason to panic. A pharmacist can tell you how far apart to take the two. If you are on a course of antibiotics, ask before you take a zinc-containing gummy the same day.
| Nutrient | Amount | Daily Value | Upper limit | Care point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zinc | 2.7 mg | 11 mg | 40 mg | Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics |
| Iodine | 42 mcg | 150 mcg | 1,100 mcg | Thyroid disease, antithyroid medicine |
Iodine04
Is iodine in Gelagen safe with thyroid problems?
Ask your prescriber first: the thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormone, and NIH says high iodine combined with antithyroid medicines such as methimazole can add up and cause hypothyroidism (NIH ODS, Iodine).
Gelagen's 42 mcg is modest, 28% of the Daily Value and under 4% of the upper limit. But if you have a thyroid condition, even modest amounts are worth a conversation, because your treatment may be tuned to your intake. And biotin matters twice here: thyroid hormone tests are among those that high-dose biotin can distort (NIH ODS, Biotin), so the lab needs to know.
The lab test page gives a script for that conversation.

How do zinc and iodine add up with other products?
They add up simply: write down the zinc and iodine on every label you take and compare the total with the upper limit, 40 mg of zinc and 1,100 mcg of iodine a day.
Many multivitamins hold 8 to 15 mg of zinc, and some cold remedies hold more. Kelp and seaweed supplements can hold iodine well above a Daily Value. Gelagen adds a little to either, and rarely tips a total over. The risk is not the gummy. It is stacking products that each look small. A pharmacist can add the numbers for you in a minute if you bring the bottles.
The supplement safety checklist has a one-page routine for it.
Who should ask first06
Who should check with a clinician before taking zinc and iodine?
People on antibiotics, people with a thyroid condition, pregnant or nursing women and anyone taking several supplements should check first.
Pregnancy and nursing change iodine needs, and your obstetrician may already have you on a product that covers them. Add up what you take, and let the clinician see the list.
Never stop a thyroid medicine, antibiotic or any prescription because of a supplement. Call 911 for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing after taking a gummy.
FAQ07
Gelagen questions people ask
How much zinc do adults need?
The Daily Value is 11 mg, and the upper limit for adults is 40 mg a day from all sources (NIH ODS, Zinc). Gelagen's listed 2.7 mg is about a quarter of the Daily Value. Needs differ by sex and pregnancy, so ask a clinician for yours.
Can zinc upset the stomach?
High doses of zinc can, but 2.7 mg is far below those. If any supplement upsets your stomach, taking it with the glass of water the directions call for may help, and you should stop and ask a clinician if it continues.
What form of zinc is in Gelagen?
The product sheet lists zinc with no form, such as gluconate or citrate. That matters less at 2.7 mg, but it is one more item the printed label should settle. We list it as not stated rather than guess.
Is 42 mcg of iodine enough?
It is 28% of the 150 mcg Daily Value, so on its own it will not meet a day's need. It is meant to add to food, where iodized salt, dairy and fish supply most iodine. A clinician can advise if you worry about intake.
Does iodine affect thyroid blood tests?
Iodine itself changes thyroid function in some people, and separately biotin can distort thyroid test results. Tell the lab about both, and about any thyroid medicine, before a draw.
Can I take zinc with an antibiotic?
Not at the same time without asking. NIH says zinc can reduce the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, so a pharmacist should give you the spacing for your prescription.
