Biotin in Gelagen: 5,000 mcg, What It Does and What It Does Not
Biotin is a B vitamin that helps the body turn food into energy. Gelagen lists 5,000 mcg, about 167 times the 30 mcg Daily Value. NIH says the evidence for hair, skin and nail benefit is, at best, a few case reports and small studies, and that high doses can distort blood tests, including thyroid and troponin.

What it is01
What is biotin?
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, also called vitamin B7, that helps the body use the fats, carbohydrates and proteins in food for energy (NIH ODS, Biotin).
The body needs very little. NIH gives an Adequate Intake of 30 mcg a day for adults, and nearly everyone gets that from ordinary food. Deficiency is very rare in the United States. Gelagen's list puts biotin at the top of the headline: 5,000 mcg, which is 5 mg. The table below sets the product sheet beside the public sources.
| Name in the product sheet | Biotin |
|---|---|
| Form | free biotin |
| Amount | 5,000 mcg |
| FDA Daily Value | 30 mcg |
| %DV if per 2 gummies | 16,667% |
| %DV if per gummy (2 gummies) | 33,333% |
| Adult upper limit | No upper limit set (NIH ODS); the issue is lab-test interference |
| What the sources say | NIH ODS: hair, skin and nail claims rest, 'at best', on a few case reports and small studies |
| Sold for | The headline ingredient: sold for skin, hair and nails |
| Main caution | Biotin well above the Daily Value can cause falsely high or low results on some blood tests, including thyroid and troponin tests (NIH ODS, FDA). Tell the lab and your clinician. |
The evidence02
Does biotin help hair, skin and nails?
Only where biotin is missing, which is uncommon; for everyone else NIH describes the evidence as, at best, a few case reports and small studies (NIH ODS, Biotin).
The idea comes from what happens when biotin runs out: hair thins and the skin can develop a rash. That is the reason biotin became a beauty vitamin. A supplement fixing a deficiency is one thing. A supplement making healthy hair thicker is another, and that second claim is the one the studies do not settle. The American Academy of Dermatology advises taking biotin only if you have a diagnosed deficiency (AAD, Supplements for your skin), and says supplements for hair, skin and nails are not proven (AAD, Supplement myths).
Anyone worried about hair loss should have the cause checked. Thyroid problems, some medicines, stress and poor nutrition are all named causes (MedlinePlus, Hair loss). Biotin does not touch most of them.
The dose03
Is 5,000 mcg of biotin safe to take every day?
NIH sets no upper limit for biotin, so the vitamin itself is not the concern; the concern is wrong lab results.
166 and two-thirds dots. The gold dot is one Daily Value of biotin: 30 mcg. The product sheet lists 5,000 mcg, so it takes 167 dots (the last is two-thirds full) to draw it. If the 5,000 mcg is per single gummy and you take two, the picture doubles to 333 dots.
High biotin can make some blood tests read falsely high or low. FDA has warned about troponin, and NIH names thyroid hormone tests and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (FDA, Biotin and troponin tests). If you take Gelagen, tell your clinician and the lab before any blood draw. The full guide is on the lab test page, and the dose arithmetic is on the 5,000 mcg page.

How much biotin do you get in a day from Gelagen?
It is either 5,000 mcg or 10,000 mcg a day, depending on whether the listed amount is for two gummies or for each gummy, and the product sheet does not say which.
| Reading | Per gummy | Per day (2 gummies) | Times the Daily Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: amount is per two gummies | 2,500 mcg | 5,000 mcg | about 167 |
| B: amount is per gummy | 5,000 mcg | 10,000 mcg | about 333 |
Both are far above the 30 mcg most adults need (FDA, Daily Value). Your jar's Supplement Facts panel will show which reading is right, and the answer changes how much attention the lab-test caution deserves.
Care points05
Who should be careful with biotin?
Anyone who has regular blood tests, takes thyroid medicine or has a heart condition should ask a clinician before taking a high-dose biotin supplement.
That is a short list that covers a lot of adults. Thyroid and heart tests are among the most common blood tests there are, so a biotin habit is easy to forget until a result looks odd. If you are pregnant, nursing or taking medicine, the same principle applies to the whole gummy, not just the biotin.
Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because you started a supplement. Chest pain is an emergency: call 911 and say you take high-dose biotin. Hives or swelling of the face or throat after a gummy also needs 911.
FAQ06
Gelagen questions people ask
What does biotin do in the body?
Biotin helps enzymes break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins so the body can use them for energy. It is a water-soluble B vitamin, and the body does not store large amounts, which is one reason the Adequate Intake is a small 30 mcg a day.
Is Gelagen's biotin the same as hair growth vitamins?
It is the same vitamin that hair products advertise, at a high dose. The advertising goes further than the evidence, which NIH describes as a few case reports and small studies. We make no hair growth claim for Gelagen.
Can you get biotin from food?
Yes, and most people do. NIH says deficiency is very rare in the United States, which tells you ordinary diets supply enough. If you worry about your intake, a dietitian or doctor can check, and a blood test for deficiency exists.
Does biotin interact with medicines?
Our sources focus on lab-test interference, not drug interactions. Tell a pharmacist about every supplement you take so they can check your list. Do not stop a medicine because of biotin.
How long does biotin stay in the body?
We do not have a source with a clearance time for 5,000 mcg, so we do not give one. NIH reports a single 10 mg dose interfered with thyroid tests within 24 hours. Ask your clinician about timing before a test.
Why do skin and hair products lead with biotin?
Because the name is familiar and the deficiency story is easy to tell: no biotin, thin hair and rash. A familiar name sells, whatever the evidence for extra doses. Reading the amount and the source behind the claim is the better test of a product.
Is biotin the same as vitamin B7 and vitamin H?
Yes. Biotin has been called vitamin B7 and vitamin H. On Gelagen's list it is simply biotin. The names do not change the amount or the lab caution.
