Biotin for Hair and Nails: What the Evidence Shows and What It Does Not
Biotin helps hair and nails when a person is deficient, and deficiency is very rare. For everyone else, NIH describes the evidence as at best a few case reports and small studies, and the American Academy of Dermatology says supplements should be taken only for a deficiency. High-dose biotin, such as Gelagen's 5,000 mcg, can also make some blood tests read wrongly.

The vitamin01
What is biotin and what does it do?
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, also called vitamin B7, and it helps the body turn the fats, carbohydrates and proteins in food into energy (NIH ODS, Biotin).
The body needs only a little: NIH gives an Adequate Intake of 30 mcg a day for adults. Most people get that from ordinary food, and deficiency is very rare in the United States. When it does occur, the signs include thinning hair and a scaly rash, which is the reason biotin got its reputation. The honest summary is that biotin is essential, and that a shortage is uncommon. Raw egg white is a known cause in rare cases, because it binds biotin, and some medicines affect levels too, so a clinician is the right person to ask about your own situation.
The evidence02
Does biotin help hair and nails in people who are not deficient?
It has not been shown to: NIH says claims for hair, skin and nails are supported, at best, by a few case reports and small studies (NIH ODS, Biotin).
| Level | Evidence | For biotin and hair or nails |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest | Large controlled trials of the product | None found for Gelagen |
| Middle | Trials of the ingredient at a similar dose | Small studies and case reports, per NIH |
| Weakest | The role of the nutrient in the body | Yes, biotin is needed for energy chemistry |
| Not evidence | Testimonials and before and after photos | Plentiful, and easy to fabricate (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs) |
The American Academy of Dermatology goes further: it says biotin deficiency is rare and supplements should only be taken if you have a deficiency (AAD, Supplements for your skin). A dermatologist can order a test if a deficiency is suspected, which is a better start than a high-dose product.
Dose03
How much biotin do hair and nail products contain?
Many sell thousands of micrograms, far above the 30 mcg adequate intake, and Gelagen's 5,000 mcg is about 167 times it.
166 and two-thirds dots. The gold dot is one Daily Value of biotin: 30 mcg. The product sheet lists 5,000 mcg, so it takes 167 dots (the last is two-thirds full) to draw it. If the 5,000 mcg is per single gummy and you take two, the picture doubles to 333 dots.
The gap between 30 mcg and several thousand is large, and the marketing seldom mentions it. Because no upper limit has been set for biotin, the vitamin itself is not the concern. The concern is that at this dose a blood test can be thrown off. That is a separate kind of risk, and it is the one a buyer should plan for.
The catch04
Why does biotin matter for blood tests?
High-dose biotin can make some blood tests read falsely high or falsely low, including thyroid tests and troponin, the test for a heart attack (FDA, Biotin and troponin tests).
FDA has received reports of falsely low troponin linked to biotin, and NIH says a single 10 mg dose interfered with thyroid tests given within 24 hours (NIH ODS, Biotin). A wrong number can lead to a wrong decision, and you may never feel the biotin at work. So tell your clinician and the lab you take it before any draw. The lab tests page has a script you can use.
Never stop a prescribed medicine because of a supplement. Chest pain is an emergency: call 911 and say you take high-dose biotin.

How do you find out whether you are low in biotin?
Ask a clinician, who can look at your diet, your medicines, your symptoms and, where it makes sense, order a test.
Biotin shortage is uncommon, so clinicians usually look for more common causes of thinning hair first, such as thyroid problems and iron. If a shortage is suspected, the clinician decides which test to use and how to read it. The test itself matters here, because some lab methods can be thrown off by biotin you are already taking. That is another reason to tell the clinician about any supplement before the draw.
Taking a high-dose product first can blur the picture, so it is better to test before you treat than after.
Gelagen06
Where does Gelagen's biotin fit in this picture?
Gelagen lists 5,000 mcg of biotin, which is far above a typical need, so it is a high-dose product whose benefit for healthy hair and nails is unproven.
The gummy also lists 12 other names, none of them collagen. If you try it, do so with your clinician's agreement, keep the lab-test caution in mind, and track your results fairly. The biotin ingredient page has the product sheet beside the sources.
Deciding07
Should you take biotin for hair and nails?
Only after finding the cause of your hair or nail concern, and with your clinician's agreement if you have blood tests coming up or take thyroid medicine.
Hair and nail changes have many causes, from thyroid problems to medicines to stress (MedlinePlus, Hair loss), and biotin reaches only one. If a clinician finds a shortage, they will choose the product and dose. If they find another cause, a biotin supplement would not help, and could cloud the tests used to find it. If you decide to try one anyway, use the results timeline to keep the trial honest.
FAQ08
Gelagen questions people ask
How much biotin should I take for hair growth?
We cannot give a dose for hair growth, because the evidence in healthy people is thin. The Adequate Intake is 30 mcg a day. A clinician can advise if a deficiency is found, and will pick the product and dose.
Does biotin cause hair loss?
Our sources link low biotin to thin hair, not high biotin. High doses can distort blood tests, which may delay finding a real cause of hair loss. See a clinician for sudden thinning.
Is 10,000 mcg of biotin safe?
NIH sets no upper limit for biotin, but 10 mg is the single dose NIH names as interfering with thyroid tests within 24 hours. The lab-test issue is the reason to ask a clinician first.
How long does biotin take to work on nails?
We do not know, because the evidence is limited. Nails grow slowly over months, so any honest check needs at least two months and dated photos.
Can biotin cause acne or breakouts?
We found no source in our set that links biotin to acne, so we make no claim. If you break out after starting a supplement, stop it and ask a dermatologist.
Can I get enough biotin from food?
Yes, nearly everyone does, which is why NIH calls deficiency very rare in the United States. Biotin occurs in ordinary foods, so a varied diet usually supplies the 30 mcg adequate intake without a supplement.
Which is better for hair, biotin or a multivitamin?
We cannot say. Neither is proven for healthy hair. A balanced diet is the AAD's first advice, and a clinician can check for a shortage.
