Biotin and Thyroid Tests: Why 5,000 mcg Matters
High-dose biotin can distort thyroid blood tests, making results look as though thyroid disease is present or absent when it may not be. Gelagen lists 5,000 mcg. If you have a thyroid test coming, or take thyroid medicine, tell your clinician about the gummies first.

What can go wrong?
Some thyroid tests can read too low or too high when biotin is in the blood. FDA has warned that the errors can lead to a wrong diagnosis or wrong treatment (FDA, Biotin and troponin tests). We do not describe individual cases because the details vary by test.
Who is most affected?
People being tested for thyroid problems, and people on thyroid medicine whose dose is adjusted by blood results. For them an artificial result could change a decision. This is a reason to speak up, not a reason to panic.
What about iodine in Gelagen?
The list also names iodine at 42 mcg, which is about 28 percent of its Daily Value if the amount is per two gummies. Iodine matters to the thyroid, and NIH says too much or too little can affect it (NIH ODS, Iodine). At this amount, the more pressing issue is the biotin.

Tell the clinician who orders your thyroid tests about the supplement and its dose, and ask whether to pause it before the draw. If you already had a test while taking it, say so and ask whether to repeat. Bring the jar or the label to the visit.

FAQ01
Gelagen questions people ask
Does biotin cause thyroid disease?
No source says it does. The concern is that biotin can make a test result wrong, not that it changes the thyroid.
Can I take Gelagen with thyroid medicine?
Ask your pharmacist. Several minerals can affect how some thyroid medicine is absorbed, and spacing matters.
How soon after stopping is a test reliable?
Sources do not give one number for every test. Ask the lab, and be ready to give the dose.
