Vitamin D in Gelagen: What 10 mcg Means
Gelagen lists vitamin D as cholecalciferol at 10 mcg, which is 400 IU and about half of the 20 mcg Daily Value if the amount is per two gummies. It is a modest top-up. Sunlight, food and your clinician's blood test tell you more about your need than a gummy does.

What does vitamin D do?
It helps the body absorb calcium and supports bones, muscles and the immune system. The skin makes it when sunlight reaches it, and food gives a smaller share (NIH ODS, Vitamin D). Many people in northern climates run low in winter, which is why it is a common supplement.
What does 10 mcg equal?
One microgram of vitamin D is 40 IU, so 10 mcg is 400 IU. The Daily Value is 20 mcg or 800 IU. The adult upper limit is 100 mcg a day, so Gelagen's amount sits far below it, even if the listed figure is per gummy and the daily dose doubles.
Does vitamin D help skin?
The body needs it for normal skin cell growth and repair, but we found no study showing that a gummy with 10 mcg changes the look of skin. A sunburn is a far bigger skin problem than low vitamin D, so sun protection comes first (CDC, Skin cancer prevention).

Ask your clinician about a blood test, mention your skin tone, where you live and how much time you spend outdoors. Vitamin D tests can be affected by biotin in some labs, so mention the gummies too. Our vitamin D page has more.

FAQ01
Gelagen questions people ask
Is 400 IU of vitamin D enough?
It is half of the Daily Value. Needs vary, and a clinician can check your level with a blood test.
Can I take extra vitamin D with Gelagen?
Add the totals first. The adult upper limit is 100 mcg a day from all sources, and Gelagen is a small part of it.
Does wearing sunscreen lower my vitamin D?
It reduces production somewhat in the lab, but studies of everyday use show little effect on levels. Sun protection is still advised.
Is cholecalciferol the same as D3?
Yes. Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3, the form the skin makes.
