Vitamins for Skin: A Plain List and What Each One Does
Skin needs vitamin A, C, D and E, biotin and other B vitamins, zinc and protein, among others. Each has a job, and a shortage can show in skin, but extra beyond need is not shown to help. The fat-soluble group: A, D and E
Vitamin A supports normal growth of skin cells (NIH ODS, Vitamin A). Vitamin D is made in skin with sunlight and supports skin cell growth (NIH ODS, Vitamin D). Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cell membranes (NIH ODS, Vitamin E). All three are stored in the body, so excess builds up more than for water-soluble vitamins, which is why they have upper limits.
The water-soluble group: C and the B vitamins
Vitamin C is needed to make collagen and helps wounds heal (NIH ODS, Vitamin C). Biotin supports the use of fats and carbohydrates, and a rare deficiency causes a scaly rash (NIH ODS, Biotin). B6, B12, folate and pantothenic acid are also involved in cell function. These are mostly excreted when intake exceeds need.
Minerals and others
Zinc supports wound healing and skin integrity (NIH ODS, Zinc). Iodine feeds the thyroid, which affects skin dryness. Protein supplies the building blocks. Water matters too. Choline and inositol, in trace amounts in Gelagen, have no skin role at that dose.
